Ms Swaraj is known for helping Indian migrants who are stuck in foreign countries for different reasons. However, this is probably the first time she has come forward to help an illegal migrant.
The migrant, who goes by the name Vipin on Twitter, was stuck in Malaysia according to his tweet. He approached Ms Swaraj seeking help to get out of the country.
According to the information he provided on Twitter, Vipin had been cheated by a migration agent and was living illegally in Malaysia. In an emotional tweet, he appealed Ms Swaraj to help him go back to India to his sick mother.
“Please save me. Am in Malaysia cheated by agent. Illegal here. My mother is sick. I want to see her. Go back to India. Save me please :((sic),” Vipin’s tweet read.
Ms Swaraj responded, directing the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to help Vipin as it was a “compassionate case”.
High Commission officials immediately contacted him. Vipin thanked Ms Swaraj in another tweet.
“Thank you so much mam. Literally crying. I have been twisting for more than months,” tweeted Vipin.
Many people showered praise on Sushma Swaraj after this ‘act of kindnesses’.
“INDIA needs such a dedicated minister. Such a quick support can be seen only now, after 70 years. GREAT!!,” Mr Rajendra Poddar tweeted.
However, in the same thread, there is a tweet from a user Noor Ul Ayen who claims to have tweeted Ms Swaraj several times with no response yet.
“Ma'am! Kindly look into our matter we are suffering since long help me to get an Indian visa. My wedding has been fixed on April 18th.pls. Ma'am respond. I have tweeted you many times pls,” read Noor Ul Ayen’s tweet.
Noor Ul Ayen is from Karachi in Pakistan. She is seeking a visa to visit India for her marriage on April 18.
India-Pakistan relations soured recently when India claimed an air strike after an attack on its soldiers in Pulwama, Kashmir.
Ms Noor told SBS Hindi she had not heard from Ms Swaraj or any other official so far despite tweeting several times.
