The murder trial of Sam Abraham, who was allegedly poisoned to death by his wife and her lover, began on Monday at Victorian Supreme Court.

33-year-old Sam Abraham was found dead at his home in Epping, Melbourne in October 2015. At the time of his death, he was thought to have died a natural death.

However, almost a year later, detectives arrested Sam’s wife Sofia and her male friend in connection with his death and alleged Sam was given cyanide by his wife Sofia.

Sofia Sam and her lover, Arun Kamalasanan were arrested by police in August 2016 and charged with murder by Victoria Police.

reports, on Monday the trial opened in the Supreme Court where the jury heard the lovers expressed their deep affection for each other in a diary they shared.

Prosecutor Kerri Judd QC detailed what paramedics saw on the morning of Mr Abraham's death.

"He had passed out and was foaming at the mouth. He could not be woken. He was not breathing," she told the jury.

An autopsy later revealed that Mr Abraham had died of cyanide poisoning, the jury was told.

And prosecutors believe it was his wife and her alleged lover who are responsible.

"The two accused, acting together, murdered the deceased by poisoning him," Ms Judd said.

The jury heard Sam and Kamalasanan knew each other from their college days in India.

Sam married Mr Abraham in India in 2008. She moved to Melbourne in late 2012 and Mr Abraham joined her in early 2013.

But prosecutors say she was in love with Kamalasanan who moved to Melbourne in July 2013 on a student visa leaving his wife and child behind.

Ms Judd illustrated the pair's relationship by reading entries from a diary that Sam started in January the same year.

"Can you hold me tight? I want to drift away in your love," she read from one of Sam's entries, as the diary was displayed on a screen in court.

"You are the one for me, but you don't belong to me.

"I remember the college days when you used to come near me to ask me something. I used to make my steps faster to reach you."
Sam later handed the diary to Kalamasanan, the jury heard, and he made entries in it as well.

"It may take thousands of books to describe how much I love my love. My eternal love," he allegedly wrote in July 2013.

"She is the best match for me ... but what to do? I am sure that one day she will be mine."

Ms Judd did not have time to finish her opening on Monday and the jury have not yet been told how the poison was allegedly administered.

The trial is set to continue on Tuesday with the remainder of the prosecution opening, followed by evidence from witnesses.
