45-year-old Raju Kosuri faces deportation to India after completing his sentence,. His wife and couple’s US-born son are also being sent back to India.
Raju Kosuri used shell companies to illegally apply for around a thousand foreign workers visas. He made over $ 20 mn through this scam what prosecutors described as a visa-for-sale system.
Kosuri had pleaded guilty last year to visa fraud and other charges.
US District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema said in Alexandria federal court last week that prosecution of the case had some problems that led to a more “lenient sentence”.
The couple had been convicted on charges of H-1B visa fraud in April this year. At that time, the US Department of Justice had said that the couple was facing up to 30 years imprisonment.
Kasuri’s wife, Smriti Jharia is one of his illegally-sponsored immigrants. 46-year-old Jharia pleaded guilty to obtaining naturalization. She agreed to move back to India immediately. Her son, a US citizen by birth, would go with her. She has also given up her US citizenship.
"My client was grateful that she was permitted to voluntarily remove herself from the United States. Unfortunately, her son has to pay a heavy price for her criminal conduct,” Jharia’s attorney Steve McCool was quoted saying by The Washington Post.
