Indian man pleads guilty to murdering new wife

Douglas Eustace married Mary Freeman in October 2017 so he could stay in Australia. On Monday, he pleaded guilty to her murder.

An Indian man has pleaded guilty to the stabbing murder of his wife in Melbourne.

41-year-old Mary Freeman was stabbed at her home in Hallam, Melbourne’s South-East on Australia Day this year.

Police alleged Freeman’s husband Douglas Derick Eustace, an Indian national stabbed her multiple times after an argument erupted and escalated.

Freeman had married the 44-year-old in October 2017 within weeks of meeting him so he could remain in Australia.

Eustace allegedly left the scene before handing himself to police.

On Monday, Eustace appeared before the Victorian Supreme court and pleaded guilty when he was arraigned on a single charge of murder.

Eustace, who is in custody, will return to court for a pre-sentence hearing on December 12.
