More details have emerged about the alleged murder of Indian man Sam Abraham when his 32-year-old wife Sofia Sam's bail application came up for hearing in Supreme Court of Victoria on Wednesday.
Sofia Sam along with her friend, known as AK, has been accused of murdering Sam Abraham in October 2015. The duo has been charged with murder by Victoria Police who alleges that Sam was poisoned with cyanide.
On Wednesday, the court heard Victoria Police covertly recorded AK’s phone conversation, reported.
Police say on phone he is alleged to have said he broke into the couple’s home on the night of the murder, mildly sedated them and their 7-year-old son.
He allegedly told police that he waited for the family to fall asleep before pouring cyanide-laced orange juice into Sam’s mouth.
He also allegedly told police that Sofia had not asked him to kill her husband but that he believed she knew about the murder and would support him.
The court heard Sofia told police she was asleep beside her husband while her friend allegedly poured cyanide-laced orange juice down his throat.
She told police she could not wake Sam Abraham the morning after, the court heard. The paramedics were called who pronounced him dead.
On the day Sam was dead, Sofia woke her 7-year-old son and told him that AK had visited and left him chocolates, the court heard. Police say the 7-year-old told them this.
When the details of Sam’s alleged murder were read out in court, Sofia was crying, reported.
Sofia applied for bail but Justice David Beach refused her application, saying she had not shown there were "exceptional circumstances" that justified her release.
Ms Sam will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court in June.
