Gujarat is a land of fun-loving and creative people - its theatre has produced some unbelievable plays that are entertaining and exciting. Here are five Hindi movies inspired by or adapted from Gujarati plays.
102 Not Out
'102 Not Out' is based on a Gujarati play of the same name. Filmmaker Umesh Shukla shared that he had produced the play for almost six years after which he realised that the film had universal appeal. It's a critically acclaimed comedy-drama story of a father-son relationship, a film, which Mr Shukla says is timeless.
The film story revolves around a 102-year-old man trying to break the record for the oldest person in the world, which in the film is held by a Chinese man.
Super Nani
Super Nani, released in 2014, is a story is inspired by a well known Gujarati drama - Baa ae Maari Boundary. It stars veteran actors such as the late Padmarani, Sanas Vyas, Jagesh Mukati, Jimit Trivedi, Linesh Fanse, Snehal Trivedi, Deepali Bhuta, Harsh Mehta, Dheeraj Singh. It's described as a thoughtful comedy.
It is a story of a lady who spends her entire life serving her family and is never valued, instead she is insulted and family members make fun of her. Then her grandson returns from the United States and changes things for her. The film had known actors like Rekha, Sharman Joshi, Shweta Kumar, Randhir Kapoor, Anupam Kher. The film, however, was not widely received by audiences.

OMG
Kanji Viruddh Kanji is an original Gujarati play from which Krishan vs Kanhaiya — and OMG Oh My God are based.
Kanji Viruddh Kanji is a story of an atheist, who incurs huge losses when an earthquake destroys his antique shop. The story revolves around the fight of the atheist with the Almighty. It may not be known that Tiku Talsania played the lead role of Kanjee in Gujarati version of the drama.
The play gained popularity in the theatre and was immediately adapted into a film starring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in lead roles. The film was a blockbuster and managed to question and change mentalities towards the concept of religion and blind beliefs.
WAQT- The race against time
‘Aavjo Vhala Fari Malishu’ is a Gujarati play based on which the successful movie WAQT- The race against time made. The play was produced by Hats off Productions and was quite well acclaimed. The actors of the play were Deven Bhojani, Vandana Pathak, Jamnadas Majethia (JD) and Sucheta Trivedi.
Bollywood director/ producer Vipul Shah adapted it into a film, which performed averagely at the box-office. The star cast of the film included Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Chaya.
Aankhen
Directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the movie is adapted from his own Gujarati play 'Andhlo Pato'. It surely must have been an exciting experience to see this thriller play out on stage live.
Ittefaq
Ittefaq film was adapted from Gujarati drama Dhummas. It was a suspense thriller film. This film was a semii hit at the box office. This was the fourth bollywood film that did not have any songs. The cast of this film was Rajesh Khanna,Nanda and Bindu. This movie was released in 1969. In Gujarati drama Sarita Joshi acted.
