Young Greeks from fire-ravaged Mati in solidarity with Australians affected by bushfires

A group of young Greeks from Mati, the town near Athens which was ravaged by fires in 2018, has spearheaded an initiative in support of victims of the Australian bushfires.

“Stay strong Australia!” reads the banner depicted in one of the photos from the group’s gathering.

“Seventeen months ago, everything was burned to the ground here. We lost thousands of our trees, our homes, our stores but worst of all we lost 102 of our beloved people,” states the message on the reasons they can empathise with Australians.

An environmental group, We4all, teamed up with schools and locals and planted 1,000 trees in one of the Attica areas most affected by the 2018 fires, in an act which was also meant to express their solidarity with Australia.

Furthermore, as We4all spokesman Yiannis Iliopoulos told SBS Greek, part of the organisation’s proceeds this month will be donated to bushfire relief initiatives Down Under.
