Roma Siachou, head of the Coordinating Committee for the Commemorative Events of The Genocide of the Greeks in Pontus talks to SBS Greek.


On the 19th of May, Greek across the globe commemorate the 101st Anniversary of τhe Genocide of the Greeks in Pontus. In Melbourne, the Coordinating Committee for the Commemorative Events of the Genocide had planned a series of events but there were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Commission, set up in 1987 by several Pontian associations of Melbourne, aims to organize commemorative events and to promote the recognition of the genocide by the Australian States and Territories' Governments and by the Federal Government.

Roma Siachou is the head of the Committee and she told SBS Greek that despite the cancellation of the events, the efforts for the genocide's recognition will continue. 

"We will do what we have to do to honor these people. We are their descendants and we have an obligation to continue to fight with all the means we have to achieve our goal."
