Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says it’s a result of the government implementing strict measures early on to limit the virus’ spread. A lockdown was in place 26 days after the first case, when there were just over 200 cases.

With no new infections and the last remaining case no longer active, New Zealand is now coronavirus-free. This positive step towards the virus’ eradication has led to the government's decision to remove event and internal travel restrictions.
