COVID-19 update: Victorian Premier tests positive for coronavirus, new cases continue to decline in NSW

This is your update on COVID-19 in Australia for 28 March.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has tested positive for COVID-19 on a rapid antigen test. Mr Andrews said he has "mild symptoms", including a sore throat and temperature. He will now isolate for seven days.

Victorian authorities reported 8,739 new COVID cases on Monday compared to 7,466 on Sunday.

The number of new cases in New South Wales NSW has declined from 17,450 on Sunday to 16,199 on Monday. The total number of cases in the state last Thursday, Friday and Saturday were 24,803, 23,702 and 19,843, respectively.

NSW's nurses and midwives plan a 24-hour statewide strike on 31 March. They are asking for a pay hike, and many are off work sick or isolating due to COVID-19. This is their second strike in six weeks.

Tasmania's Health Department has apologised for sending wrong messages to 540 people claiming they were close contacts.

The federal and ACT governments to invest $38 million in mental health and suicide prevention as part of the Territory's pandemic recovery.

The Australian government has rolled out a new COVID-19 campaign named 'Boost' to encourage eligible Australians to book a booster dose and stay updated with their vaccination status.

COVID-19 Australian Stats

New South Wales reported 1,270 patients hospitalised, with 55 in intensive care and 17 requiring ventilation. There were three deaths and 16,199 new cases of COVID-19.

In Victoria, 252 people are in hospital, with 21 in ICU and six on ventilators. There were no deaths and 8,739 new infections.

Tasmania has recorded zero death and 1,726 new COVID-19 cases. There were 27 people in public hospitals.  

In Queensland, there were 7,816 new COVID-19 cases, and 14 patients were in ICU.

In the ACT,  46 people are now in hospital with COVID-19, four of them requiring intensive care, and 701 new infections have been reported. 

Western Australia reported 210 patients hospitalised, with nine in intensive care. There were 7,288  new COVID-19 cases.

In South Australia two people have died. There are 181 people in hospital, including seven people in ICU, and two people requiring a ventilator. The state reported 4,140 news cases.

Northern Territory reported 279 new cases of COVID-19. There are currently 16 patients in hospital, with no patients requiring oxygen. There are three patients in ICU.
