COVID-19 Update: Some elective surgery to resume in Victoria from Monday

  • The Victorian Government has announced some elective surgery can resume from Monday but a date for full resumption has not yet been decided. 
  • Victoria also announced a $1.4 billion funding package that Health Minister Martin Foley said would be critical in helping the state's health system navigate its response to Omicron.
  • NSW reported another 31 COVID-19 deaths and there were 36 fatalities in Victoria, with hospitalisations in both states continuing to decline.
  • Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said 45,000 out of 170,000 eligible aged care residents still have not received the third COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
  • Mr Hunt pointed to hesitancy among aged care residents as being behind low COVID-19 booster rates.
  • Elective and day surgeries in hospitals will be passed in the Northern Territory to help ease the pressure on the health system.
  • Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said the state was seeing a "disproportionate" number of deaths in older people who have not received a booster shot.

COVID-19 Stats:

NSW reported 2,494 patients have been hospitalised with 160 in intensive care, 31 new deaths, and 10,698 new cases of COVID-19.

In Victoria, 707 people are hospitalised, including 79 in ICU. There were 36 deaths and 11,240 new infections.

In Queensland, there are 732 people in hospital including 50 in intensive care, 13 deaths and 6,857 new cases.

In Tasmania, there were 570 cases, 13 people in hospital, including 2 in ICU. 

The ACT recorded one death and 449 new cases, including 65 people in hospital and one in ICU.
