COVID-19 Update: Omicron cases on the rise in Australia

  • 180 people associated to a school in Canberra are forced into isolation over fears of Omicron exposure.
  • NSW records six new Omicron cases taking the total toll of infections with this variant to 31.
  • From 17 December, unvaccinated people will be barred from in Queensland. 
  • Queensland health minister informs that a positive case on the Gold Coast is linked to an aged care facility, but so far no one else in the facility has tested positive.
  • A survey from the Australian Red Cross found one in three people are less excited for the festive season compared to previous years, and  61 per cent are concerned about vulnerable family and friends being lonely if travel restrictions remain in place.
COVID-19 STATS: 

Victoria recorded 1,185 locally acquired cases and seven deaths.
NSW recorded 260 new community cases and two deaths. 
The ACT recorded three cases, Queensland one.
