COVID-19 update: NSW reports first cases of 'Deltacron' and combined Omicron infections

Australia reported at least 25 COVID-19 deaths, including nine in Queensland and eight in New South Wales, on Friday.

New South Wales has recorded the first cases of 'Deltacron' - a hybrid of Delta and Omicron variants - and mixed Omicron infections.

Data from NSW Health's weekly COVID-19 report showed three specimens had Delta/Omicron BA.1 mixed infection, and four had Omicron BA.1/BA.2 mixed infections last month.

A Labor-chaired Senate inquiry examining the COVID-19 response has made 19 recommendations, including establishing a royal commission into how Australia handled the pandemic.

Other recommendations include setting up Australia's own Centre for Disease Control, greater transparency for health bodies like the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee and new laws to crack down on medical misinformation.
