COVID-19 update: New cases, hospitalisations rise in Victoria as Australia reports 49 deaths

This is your update on COVID-19 in Australia for 12 May.

On Thursday, Australia reported at least 49 COVID-19 deaths, including 23 in New South Wales and 15 in Victoria.

Western Australia (WA) reported 16,670 new daily cases, a slight dip in the number of new infections (17,033) recorded on Wednesday. WA also reported six historical deaths.

The University of Sydney has partnered with Bharat Biotech of India and ExcellGene SA of Switzerland to develop a vaccine against all known and future variants of SARS-CoV-2.

UK Vaccine Task Force and National Institute for Health Research funded study in Lancet reveals that the fourth dose of mRNA vaccines boosts immunity in people aged 70 and above. It said peak responses after the fourth dose were similar to or possibly better than the third dose. 

North Korea has confirmed its first case of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Its state media called the situation a "major national emergency" but didn't reveal the number of cases.
