COVID-19 Update: International border reopening on track as Queensland opens state borders today

  • Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says international border reopening is on track for 15 December.
  • Hundreds are reunited with families as Queensland opens borders for NSW and Victoria after almost five months.
  • Another 1.5 million Australians are now eligible to get their COVID-19 booster shot, after a decision to reduce the gap between injections from six months to five. ATAGI has approved the Moderna vaccine to be used as a booster shot, alongside Pfizer.
  • Federal Health secretary Brendan Murphy says the emergence of the Omicron variant makes getting a booster vaccination even more important.
  • The Argyle House nightclub cluster in Newcastle has grown to 84 and around 700 people are deemed close contacts. It is also likely that some of these cases are Omicron infections.
  • NSW has recorded nine Omicron infections overnight.
COVID-19 STATS: 

Victoria recorded 1,290 locally acquired cases and two deaths.
NSW recorded 536 new community cases. 
The ACT recorded three cases, Queensland one.
