COVID-19 update: Current wave expected to peak in mid-April, Queensland eases restrictions

The Australian Health Protection Principal (AHPP) Committee notes that the number of daily COVID-19 cases has increased by more than 76 per cent between 11 March and 23 March. The number of hospitalisations jumped by nearly 25 per cent in the same period.

AHPP said the current wave could peak around mid-April in many jurisdictions.

Authorities have attributed the rise in daily COVID cases to a sub-variant of the Omicron strain known as BA.2. 

Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital has started a new clinic to treat patients with long COVID - a condition that occurs in infected people after three months. Symptoms of long COVID include shortness of breath, cough, fatigue, and concentration or memory issues. 

Queensland residents are not required to get tested or quarantine 12 weeks after recovery. 

Research published in  claims that ivermectin doesn't reduce the risk of COVID hospitalisation. The antiparasitic drug has surged in popularity as an alternative treatment for COVID-19.

Victoria: 10,424 new cases, 310 in hospital, 12 in ICU, six deaths

Australian Capital Territory: 1,014 new cases, 46 in hospital, two in ICU, one death

Queensland: 10,722 new cases, 403 in hospital, 14 in ICU, three deaths

Tasmania 2,108 new cases, 30 in hospital, zero in ICU, zero death

Western Australia: 8,731 news cases, 211 in hospital, 11 in ICU and two deaths
