COVID-19 Update: Australia records highest daily cases after NSW numbers spike

  • Australia records its highest daily number of cases since the start of the pandemic. 
  • NSW records its highest daily number of cases with almost a third of them in the Hunter New England region. 
  • Another pub in Newcastle was listed as an exposure site by NSW Health and has shut its doors.
  • NSW presents a budget deficit of $19.5 billion, reflecting the cost of the pandemic to the public coffers. 
  • Queensland's Health Minister Yvette D'ath says residents should know how to act sensibly in the face of a growing COVID-19 outbreak in the state. 
  • Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins will miss the Adelaide Test after being confirmed as a close contact. 
  • New Zealand reaches a 90 per cent double vaccination rate. 

COVID-19 STATS:

Victoria recorded 1,622 locally acquired cases and nine deaths.
NSW recorded 1,742 new community cases. 
Queensland recorded 22 new cases, 18 are locally acquired.
The ACT recorded 11 cases and Tasmania one.
