COVID-19 Update: Australia records 25 deaths across five states

This is your update on COVID-19 in Australia for March 22.

  • Victoria has recorded seven new COVID-19 deaths, while four people died from the virus in NSW and South Australia, respectively. 
  • Queensland recorded a further nine deaths, while Tasmania reported one death.
  • NSW Deputy Chief Health Officer Marianne Gale urged parents of children aged five and older to get them vaccinated "without delay", saying many children would now be eligible for their second dose.
  • The Victorian state government announced 140,000 travel vouchers would be open to the public from 2pm on Wednesday.
  • The scheme provides applicants with a $200 reimbursement if they spend more than $400 on accommodation or attractions.
  • Newly-elected South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has unveiled new government modelling, which he says shows the state could reach 8,000 new daily COVID-19 cases by April.
  •  SA health officials reimposed but did not announce, a ban on some elective surgery in public hospitals on the eve of Saturday's state election.

COVID-19 Australian Stats

New South Wales reported 1,177 patients hospitalised with 41 in intensive care. There were four deaths and 20,960 new cases of COVID-19.

In Victoria, 256 people are in hospital with 24 in ICU and five on ventilators. There were seven deaths and 9,594 new infections.

Tasmania has recorded one further death and 1,825 new COVID-19 cases. There are 25 people with COVID-19 in hospital.

In the ACT 38 people are now in hospital with COVID-19, three of them requiring intensive care and 1,014 new infections have been reported.

In Queensland, there were 8,881 new COVID-19 cases and nine deaths. 252 people are hospitalised with COVID-19, with nine patients in ICU.

South Australia has recorded a further four deaths and 3,686 new cases. There are 165 people with the virus in hospital, 11 of them in intensive care.
