S.O.S. in Fremantle Port!
An unfortunate accident happened around 6.15am in Fremantle Port, when the arriving container ship Maersk Shekou was pushed into the STS Leeuwin and the Maritime Museum by an extremely strong squall of wind. The bow of the container vessel took out the masts of the Leeuwin, and a piece of sail could be seen hanging from the bow. After that the ship was pushed back, and the stern of the ship hit the wharf and the roof of the Maritime Museum, where it caused minor damage. A long scratch can be seen at the back of the ship, where it hit Victoria Quay. Two people who were on watch on the STS Leeuwin were injured, one of them has a broken arm. There is no hole in the Leeuwin, so it appears all damage was done above deck.
Op de foto's van Roel is goed te zien dat de masten zijn afgebroken en de schade aan de Leeuwin II groot is. Ook de kade en het dak van het Maritime Museum werden geraakt.
