Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are set to meet, Russian and US officials said, with reports details of the summit will be finalised on Thursday.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov, speaking after Putin held talks with US National Security Adviser John Bolton in the Kremlin on Wednesday, said the summit would take place in a mutually convenient third country and that several more weeks were needed to prepare for it.

Such a summit is likely to irritate US allies who want to isolate Putin, such as Britain or who are concerned about Trump's attitude towards Russia.

It is also likely to go down badly among foreign and domestic critics who question Trump's commitment to NATO and fret over his desire to rebuild ties with Moscow even as Washington tightens sanctions.

The summit will include one-on-one talks between the presidents along with a broader session and conclude with a joint news conference, Ushakov said. He added that Trump and Putin are expected to issue a joint statement

The meeting is expected to take place after Trump attends a NATO summit and visits Britain next month.

Bolton said later at a press conference that the two leaders will meet in a third country, without elaborating.
