A 63-year-old woman has become Australia's oldest mother after giving birth to a daughter in a Melbourne hospital following IVF treatment.

The Tasmanian woman, who has not been named, was implanted with a donor embryo at a facility overseas, the Seven Network reported, in a move criticised by IVF expert Gab Kovacs.

"Our bodies weren't designed to have children in our 60s. I don't think any responsible IVF unit in Australia would treat someone of that age, and it's not a standard of medicine I would condone," Professor Kovacs told News Corp newspapers.
