In an interview with SBS Radio Mandarin Program, the candidate of Riverton denies that 20% property tax on foreign purchases is a One Nation proposal:
“The tax you’ve mentioned does not belong to One Nation, it is a labor proposal. Labor’s policy is that when purchasing property, non-locals will have to pay additional tax. We will definitely cut down on tax, and not to increase it.”
Mr Chang also expresses his view on how such a tax would impact the WA debt problem.
“I don’t think it will help (ease) the debt problem. The current property market in Perth is already down significantly. If you make it harder for the buyers, it’s going to get worse. Adding this tax will not help the property market, and will have very little impact on the debt.”
On One Nation's website, the very first sentence on the multiculturalism page states "Multiculturalism has failed everywhere." Mr Chang explains that multiculturalism has failed everywhere else, but works in Australia.
"Why Australia is different, we have triple A. No matter where you are from, you should Assimilate, Accept and Adapt. You need to accept, agree with and be involved with Australian law. You should not bring your own laws to Australia. Although everyone have their own culture, but if you come here, you should abide to Australian laws and not break any rules."
On how to determine whether a person has been successfully assimilated, Mr Chang says "If you can accept and obey Australian laws, make friends with everyone regardless of their (cultural) background. Participate in everyone's activities, not just your own and not just talk to your own people. go to normal school, not your own type of school."
Mr Chang faces some assimilation problems of his own. On his Facebook page, one person left a comment under his campaign video "I find it very hard to understand your thick foreign accent"
"Yes, I saw that comment as well. Someone said my accent isn't local and (she) could not understand. There are also two or three others who said they could understand me perfectly. In terms of One Nation's assimilation policy, there is no criteria for English standards. All it is, is that being able to speak and write (English) will certainly help you in this environment in the future."
Having a Chinese background, it is natural for Tshung Chang to be compared with Shan Ju Lin, former One Nation candidate in Queensland. Shan Ju Lin drew much criticism within the Chinese community with her "good Asian will vote for me" comment. Tshung has a different take on how to define good/bad Asian.
"I have a different take on that. Anyone who is hard working will support One Nation. We dislike those who have not been working for ten, twenty years. Anyone who is hard working, who contributes to society is a good person."
Shan Ju Lin famously claimed that there are two types of Asians, the good ones will vote for her, the others are Chinese Communist Party(CCP) supporters. When asked about his take on this definition Tshung says:
"I disagree. I do not agree that if you like CCP then you are bad, if you dislike CCP then you are good. We are fair to everyone, you can like any political party, that's no problem. I think the hard workers will vote for me."
