Up to 200 people are feared dead after a church building collapse in Nigeria's southern state of Akwa Ibom.

The collapse happened as hundreds of people were packed into the recently built Reigners Bible Church International for the ordination of the church's leader, Akan Weeks, as bishop.

Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Etete Peters, says around 200 people have died.

However, the Akwa Ibom Medical Association has placed the figure much lower, at around 20.

The exact number of fatalities is still unknown as rescue workers search through the rubble.

Musician Tony Eminue says the incident has caused extensive damage.

"Although we can't really say exactly how many lives have gone but from the toll we have at least 100 body bags in different hospitals around the state. We have dead bodies in Uyo Teaching Hospital."

The state government says it will investigate to see if building standards were compromised.
