Five people have been arrested after a man was shot dead in a targeted attack at a house in Sydney's west.

Police found the 51-year-old with multiple gunshot wounds after being called out to Meridian Place in Doonside about 7.30pm on Monday.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A short time later, officers pulled over and arrested five men - aged 22, 27, 28, 29 and 44 - in the nearby St Marys area.

All were taken to local police stations and are being questioned by police. No charges have been laid.

"The shooting is believed to be targeted," NSW Police said in a statement on Tuesday morning.
Neighbours described the victim as a "well-respected man" and "loving person".

"I trusted him with my children. He's going to be missed," one woman told reporters.

"I'm very shocked and upset," another said.

One resident on a Facebook page called "Doonside Watch and Community group 2767" described hearing at least three shots before emergency services arrived.
