EgyptAir flight disappears from radar between Paris and Cairo

An EgyptAir flight carrying 66 people has disappeared from flight radar screens between Paris and Cairo.

National carrier EgyptAir said a plane carrying 66 passengers and crew on a flight from Paris to Cairo had gone missing on Thursday, disappearing from radar over the Mediterranean Sea.

"An official source at EgyptAir stated that Flight MS804, which departed Paris at 23:09 (CEST), heading to Cairo has disappeared from radar," the airline said on its official Twitter account.

The flight reportedly carried 56 passengers and 10 crew members.

An official source confirms the plane, believed to be an Airbus A320,  lost contact with radar at 02:45 Cairo time.

EgyptAir's Twitter account states the missing plane was at 37,000 ft and disappeared ten miles into Egyptian airspace.

It also stated the aircraft was manufactured in 2003.

Search and rescue teams are looking for the missing plane, according to Egypt's Civil Aviation Ministry.

DFAT seeks info on EgyptAir passengers

Government officials are seeking details on whether any Australians were on board an EgyptAir plane which has disappeared en route to Cairo.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said Australian consular officials had been alerted about the missing aircraft.
