Mr Trump called Barack Obama's administration a complete and total disaster.

He says one of his goals would be better relations with Russia and China based on shared interests.

"An easing of tensions, an improved relations with Russia from a position of strenght only is possible, absolutely possible. A strong and smart America is a America that will find a better friend in China, better than we have right now  Look at what China is doing in the South China Sea, they're not supposed to be doing it, no respect for this country or this president. We can both benefit or we can both go our separate ways."

The White House has dismissed Mr Trump's criticism of President Obama's foreign policy, saying the US is safer and stronger than when the president assumed office in 2009.

Press Secretary Josh Earnest pointed to several achievements, including job creation and the nuclear agreement with Iran.

"What we have also seen is a strengthening of our alliances around the world. We have seen an effective, renewed focus on the Asia - Pacific region that has both positive economic and strategic benefits for the United States. So, the President has a strong record to run on."
