Detective critical after stabbing by alleged sex offender

An alleged child sex offender has been shot dead by police in a Sydney pub after twice stabbing the officer attempting to arrest him.

A senior NSW police officer is recovering in hospital after he was twice stabbed by an alleged child sex offender he was attempting to arrest.

The 45-year-old named in reports as Detective Sergeant John Breda was stabbed in the chest and abdomen in the beer garden of the busy Maroubra Junction Hotel on Australia Day afternoon.

The man who stabbed him, Nick Newman, was shot by two other police and died at the scene.

Newman, 33, was wanted for alleged child sex offences, police say.

The officer who was stabbed was rushed to St Vincents Hospital in a critical condition, where he had emergency surgery.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said the two other officers who were involved in the incident were "traumatised".
