Australians are showing huge unexpected demand for a piece of the action in the record-breaking $US2.1 billion ($A3.02 billion) Powerball draw in the United States, overloading a website selling tickets to locals.

The Lottoland website crashed under heavy demand on Thursday morning as, with less than four hours until the draw in the US, Australian buyers flocked to buy tickets with some telling the company via Twitter that they were unable to complete purchases.

Lottoland responded to customer messages on Twitter, with one customer told "we are working hard on this and I trust it will come back before (the draw)".
