A Melbourne court has heard a Bangladeshi student tried to kill her homestay host in an attempt to prove her jihadist ability.

Court documents reveal Momena Shoma, who's in the country on a student visa, was looking to commit murder in the name of I-S.

The linguistics student had only been in Australia for a week when she allegedly attacked her host with a 25 centimetre knife.

Her host, Roger Singaravelu, said the attacker kept repeating the words Allah Akbar while stabbing him in the neck.

The court has not revealed how the accused wished to plead.
