Ekush is Bangla for 21, Ekushey is synonymous with "Ekushey February" the day when Bangladesh celebrates its Bangla Language Movement and honors those who sacrificed their lives in its name on 21 February, 1952, simultaneously sewing the seeds of the independence movement. Bangladesh is the only country born out of struggle to save it's language.

UNESCO has declared this day as International Mother Language day and all languages are celebrated on this day on a global scale.

It is a really great news especially for the Bangla speaking community in Australia  and world’s Linguistics community that the Australian Federal Parliament has passed a legislation to comply with UNESCO Mission (first Nation in the world other than Bangladesh) to observe International Mother Language Day (IMLD) Movement, and Celebrate 21 (Ekushey) February as a international Mother language day officially. Bill has been passed on 12 February 2018, in Australian Federal Parliament, Moved by Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP.

Australian Bangla speaking Community feeling proud as International Mother Language Day will be observed officially in Australia from 21st February 2018, Bangla speaking community in Sydney observed International Mothers Language day in Sydney Ashfield Park on 18 February 2018.
