There are calls for a Vancouver-style tax on empty houses to help ease the rental affordability crisis gripping Australian cities.

Paying the median Sydney rent would absorb 60 per cent of the average pre-tax income of a family in the bottom 40 per cent of households by income. As a chunk of after-tax income, the burden is higher still.

Regional NSW has also emerged as the nation's most expensive non-metropolitan region in Australia for renters.
