Meet the world's first Michelin-starred street vendor

Singapore is home to the world's first Michelin-starred street vendor.

Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle in the Outram neighborhood of Singapore has joined likes of England's , California's and in Paris to be recognised by the Michelin Guide.

While you may have to wait two hours to get to the front of the line of the popular stall, this award-winning food will set you back just $2. 

The owner of the stall, Malaysian-born, Hong Kong-trained chef Chan Hong Meng, has been working in the food industry for 35 years, but could hardly believe his eyes when he received an invite to the Gala Dinner in July.
"When I received the invitation I was uncertain. I asked them, 'Are you joking? Why would Michelin come to my stall?'" said Mr Chan, whose dishes sell for just $2.

"I asked their representative. He said, 'Yes, it's true'. I said, 'I've never heard of Michelin inspectors visiting a street stall. Can even a hawker be nominated?'"

Not only was he nominated, but his humble stall was awarded one star at the glitzy award night.
"About 30 years ago when I first became a chef there were chefs who told me the highest honour you could obtain is to be in the Michelin Guide. At that time, we didn't imagine that the Michelin Guide would come here. For us chefs, we long for the day we are recognised internationally," Mr Chan said. 

"Cheers to all of us hawkers! I really think it's an honour that I can represent every hawker in Singapore internationally and bring our cuisine to the world."

Even before his Michelin star, the morning queues started to form outside Mr Chan's stall before he opened for business.

Now at peak times customers are waiting for two hours to sample some of Mr Chan's world class food.
